Mount Tallac

Comments: I almost hesitate to call this climb a "flower hike", but felt compelled to mention it anyway.  This has to be the finest hike at lakeside.  And yes there are flowers along the way.  However most of them are well into the hike, so you may not be in the mood by then.  One delight I discovered on the Tallac trudge is the Explorer Gentian pictured here.  There is also an impressive field of Soft Leaf Arnica.  For flower viewing, I use Tallac in the late summer or early fall (mid Aug. to mid Sept).  The real treat, however, is to merely stand on the summit and look around.  Oh what a feeling!

Directions: There is a prominent sign to the Tallac trailhead just a mile or two north the Park Service Visitors Center on route 89. To the right is Baldwin Beach and to the left is Mount Tallac.  The Visitors Center is located on route 89 north of the intersection of route 50 and 89 in South Lake Tahoe.  When you come to an intersection after turning off of route 89, make a left and continue to the trail head at the dead end.
