Snapdragon Family

Lewis' Monkeyflower has the standard form for this family - two petals up and three petals down.  This is the largest species of monkeyflowers at Tahoe and  one of the most colorful.
Hot Rock Penstemon is one of many Penstemons, but the only white one.
This Showy Penstemon has, in clear sight, the stamen that does not work which gives rise to the name (which means five stamens). Can you spot it?

Little Elephant Head has its trunk curled over its head and is not a typical Snapdragon.
The Bull Elephant Head has its trunk straight out.

American Speedwell seems to have only four petals because two of them have merged into one. This is one of five small but exquisite Speedwells.
The Giant Red Paintbrush has enlisted leaves to act as petals.  The flower itself has atrophied to nothing but the essentials.  So the "red" are leaves acting as petals and the yellow is the entire flower! This  doesn't look like a snapdragon, but it is.
